Manny Pacquiao arrives in L.A. as Floyd Mayweather disses him

Pacquiao beginning training in L.A.

Pacquiao had been training in General Santos City in the Philippines the past week or more, working on strength and conditioning; he’s in L.A. now to begin boxing training, including work with sparring partners that will focus on the kind of challenges Mayweather will present him in the ring.

The Pacman’s trainer, the famed Freddie Roach, said he will not be taking as much time with Pacquiao as some might thing. “The boxing would start six weeks out,” Roach told media in his gym last week. “Because if you go more than six weeks with Manny you’ll burn him out because of his work ethic.”

Roach was looking at tapes of Mayweather’s more recent fights and making decisions on strategy and the sparring partners he’ll use to work with Pacquiao. He said beating Mayweather will be difficult but is easily doable with the right approach.

“I have to come up with a perfect game plan for this one,” he said. “This is gonna be the biggest challenge ever. But I like a challenge and I think my guy can pull if off, but it won’t be easy.”

Mayweather: I only know winning

Meanwhile Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, who has a measured and methodical speaking style, in line with his style in the ring, spent time the past few days calmly taking shots at Pacquiao. He brought up his unbeaten record (47-0) and Pacquiao’s record (57-5-2), noting Pacquiao’s losses but acting as if he wasn’t sure just how many losses his opponent has.

“The only thing I know is win, so is losing in the back of his mind? Absolutely!” he told Fight Hype. “Why? Because he probably lost three or five times before, so losing is in his mind. Losing is not in my mind because the only thing I know how to do is win.”

In an interview before he left the Philippines, Pacquiao claimed the fight would be just another day at the office. Nothing so different, nothing special. Mayweather said much the same thing and he also detailed the advantages he believes he has over the Filipino, claiming a few.

“To me, it’s just another day,” Mayweather said. “It’s just another fight. I mean, when you just look at the tale of the tape, I have a longer reach, I’m taller, I’m stronger, and I’m more accurate.

“I think I seen a major change in Pacquiao,” he added. “He may not be the same fighter, but this is a guy that I cannot overlook. He got here somehow and some way. You never take nothing for granted because anything can happen.”

May 2 at MGM Grand

While Pacquiao is training at Roach’s Wildcard Gym in L.A., Mayweather Jr. will be working with his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr., in Las Vegas. Media will be alongside when invited and expect detailed reports.

The fight goes in Vegas on May 2 and the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Cost? To be in the house tickets are being estimated at anywhere from $5,000 to $100,000 for ringside seats, but actual prices have not been announced. Pay-per-view is expected to cost about $100.
