Katerina Stefanidi named ‘European Female Athlete of August’

Stefanidi has been named “Women’s European Athlete of the Month” for August of 2016 by European Athletics. She shared that honor with French athlete Kevin Mayer, who was named “Men’s European Athlete of the Month” for August, who claimed the silver medal in the men’s decathlon.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Stefanidi cleared 4.85 meters in the women’s pole vault, where she became the first Greek woman to ever win an Olympic gold medal in a field event. Her win was one of three gold medals for Greece at these Olympic Games, along with gymnast Eleftherios Petrounias who took the gold medal in still rings, as well as shooter Anna Korakaki, who won the gold and bronze medals in shooting (25 meter pistol and 10 meter air pistol) respectively.
