Not only was Jones stripped of his title and will not be competing at UFC 187, which takes place at the end of May, but he is suspended indefinitely. This comes days after Jones was accused of being involved in a hit and run accident in Albuquerque, NM. A warrant was issued for Jones’s arrest and he turned himself in on Tuesday.
Jones was set to defend his title for the ninth time against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, but has since been replaced with Daniel Cormier. The winner of Cormier vs Johnson will be crowned the new champion.
UFC released a statement, saying they were disappointed in the recent charges, but they remain supportive of Jones while he works through the legal process. The company said it is best to allow Jones time to focus on his legal matters.
Jones broke his silence and apologized to everyone he has let down and says he has a lot of soul searching to do.
UFC 187 takes place on May 23 in Las Vegas. Asides from Johnson vs Cormier, the middleweight champion Chris Weidman is defending the title against Vitor Belfort.
