Jessie Vargas to derail Pacquiao’s quest for historic world title

Pacquiao is an incumbent Philippine senator and a recognizable name in sports, having won eight world titles in as many weight classes in boxing.

On Nov. 5 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Pacquiao will try to snatch Vargas’ WBO welterweight title and if he is victorious, he will be declared the first fighting senator to win a world title.

The fight is important for the Filipino boxing star not because of the recognition of his dual role as a sportsman and politician but a knockout or a very impressive win over Vargas will assure him of more lucrative fights down the road.

Pacquiao has recently disclosed that he will continue fighting, citing his love and passion for the sport. He said he also feels young at 37.

“I don’t feel 37 or 38 now. I feel young. My body is still young and I can still do what I did in the past 10 years. I can discipline myself. It all depends on how you discipline yourself both as a public servant and as a boxer,”Pacquiao told Rappler.

But Vargas will be up in the ring on fight night in top condition to derail Pacquiao’s quest for recognition by beating him and keeping his title which Vargas is defending for the first time.

“Never in any training camps have I taken down as many sparring partners as I have in this camp, and that says a lot. My trainer Dewey Cooper, [assistant trainer] David Hayes, they’ve been making sure that I’ve been sitting down on my punches because power is gonna be a definite change in this fight from my fights in the past,” said Vargas.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao and his entourage have landed in Los Angeles over the weekend to start the final phase of training which will take place at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.
