Organised by Big Game Fishing Club Palmizana, based on the largest of the idyllic Pakleni Islands which sit in front of exclusive Hvar Town, the opening year's event attracted some 25 boats from as far away as Italy and Montenegro, and the competitive teams took to the waters from Hvar's luxury waterfront to trawl the Adriatic in search of their prey.

Shirz won the first Big Game Fishing Hvar cup, with Maguro Pro Shop and Tajna Veza in third. With the success of the first year enough to build on, big game fishing will be a regular on the late-season Hvar calendar. The final night saw celebrations on Palmizana at Toto's — the only Hvar restaurant that offers big game fishing and a driving force behind the tournament — with celebrating lasting into the early hours. The event was generously sponsored by both national and local sponsors: Sunčani Hvar Hotels, Erste bank, Petason Mesopromet, Barka, Žuvela d.o.o., Toto's, Colnago, Honda Marine, Babić, Gariful, Zaks and Pelegrini Tours

The big game fishing tournament is the latest focus on the sea in Hvar's late season, and it will be soon be followed by Peskafondo 2014, a squid-fishing tournament now in its fourth year and organised by Gariful. Meanwhile, Hvar's waters were under international scrutiny early this week in London for very different reasons, as the eagerly anticipated world premiere of Fishermen's Conversations — a look at the traditional life of fishermen in a changing modern tourism island — took place at the Raindance Festival in London.
