article imageHockey writer tweets NHL expanding by 4 clubs, including Toronto

By Marcus Hondro     Aug 27, 2014 in Sports
According to a tweet from a noted sports business writer, the NHL will expand over the next four years by 4 teams, with new franchises planned for Seattle, Las Vegas, Quebec City and Toronto. Yes, a second team in Toronto.
The tweet came from Harold Bloom of Sports Biz News, and it also says the total expansion fees for the four clubs will be $1.4 billion.
Those cities are perennially on any list of writers speculating about NHL expansion but whether or not they're are being looked at, or have been looked at as potential NHL cites, the NHL has denied the report that they are going to be awarded franchises.
“Not in our plans," the league's deputy commissioner told the french language Quebec-based TVA Sports channel today. "Nothing new to report on expansion."
However, to add fuel to this fire, other news sites have reported that expansion is taking place over the next few years, including reports that expansion to Las Vegas, which is currently building a state of the art 20,000 seat hockey/multi-sport arena, is a "done deal."
The NHL has 30 franchises, seven in Canadian markets. Quebec City had an NHL franchise, the Quebec Nordiques, but it left for Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche in 1995 (the Quebec Athletics were also briefly an NHL franchise when the league began in 1917).
Toronto, one of the league's premier markets, if not its premier market, sells out each game despite the woeful record of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the city has never had a second NHL team. The Leafs were originally known as the Toronto Arenas.
Neither Seattle nor Las Vegas has ever had a team in the NHL but each have supported hockey teams at one level or another for decades. The Seattle Thunderbirds are a junior team in the WHL while the Las Vegas Thunder are a professional team in the ECHL.
The Seattle Metropolitans of the defunct PCHA won the Stanley Cup in 1916, one season before the NHL was born.
