According to MSG, the upcoming Golovkin-Lemieux unification fight has broken pre-sale record at New York’s popular boxing venue with 6,000 tickets sold before the official selling date.
“This record-breaking pre-sale only confirms that this fight will be one of the most exciting of the year as the best meets the best for middleweight supremacy,” said Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Lemieux’s promoter. “Fans are thirsty for action and they know that is what David Lemieux and Gennady Golovkin will deliver on Oct. 17 at Madison Square Garden,” he added.
Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions, the company that handles Golovkin said public interest on the Golovkin-Lemieux fight is overwhelming.
“The interest from fans in this middleweight title unification has been overwhelming. Madison Square Garden has never had a faster pre-sale for a boxing event.”
Golovkin, who is unbeaten in 33 pro fights is coming off a TKO win against Willie Monroe, Jr at The Forum, Inglewood, California to retain his WBA (Super) & IBO middleweight titles.
The 33-year-old champion from Karagandy, Kazakhstan dropped Monroe twice in the second round but was unable to finish the Rochester, New York native, who fought gallantly despite the odds in favor of the Kazakh.
Golovkin (a.k.a.GGG), called out Floyd Mayweather after his TKO win against Monroe, telling him he is willing to slide from his normal fighting weight of 160 pounds if Mayweather can move up to 154 pounds.
Mayweather did not bite Golovkin’s offer and instead sealed a contract to fight Andre Berto on Sept. 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Lemieux (34-2-1), who hails fro Quebec, Canada has won nine straight fights since losing to Joachim Alcine in 2012 via majority decision.
Included in the Golovkin-Lemieux undercard is a title fight between Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua and Fil-American Brian Viloria for the WBC and The Ring flyweight titles.
