This was confirmed by his trainer Abel Sanchez, who said that although it is difficult for Golovkin to move down to 154 from his middleweight comfort zone, he believes that given enough time, it would be possible.
“I have said that if given enough lead time, 154 would be very possible. Difficult yes, but possible. That is why this fight would be intriguing, what would both guys at that weight bring on fight night? And would GGG be too diminished or Floyd to strong and mobile to be caught? Floyd is a great fighter who in my opinion hasn’t had a mental challenge in a very long time,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News on Thursday.
“With all the talk about a GGG fight and people asking questions, it is questioning Mayweather’s ego and manhood, so he is fighting back,” Sanchez added.
But Maweather’s camp downplayed Golovkin’s accomplishments saying, “Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It’s the biggest payday they could possibly have,” Mayweather’s camp told TMZ Sports.
“[Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career … we’re surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest,” they added.
Mayweather, who is fresh off his unanimous decision victory over Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao, is unbeaten in 48 pro fights and is set to do his retirement fight on Sept. 12
A win by Mayweather on Sept. 12 will allow him to share the spotlight with legendary American boxer Rocky Marciano, who retired from boxing with unblemished record of 49-0. Mayweather has yet to name his next opponent.
While Golovkin is likewise unbeaten in his pro career, he hasn’t fought elite fighters both in the 160 and 154 weight limits. But he has scored knockout wins against former world titlists in 160 pounds limit, including Willie Monroe, Jr., Martin Murray, Marco Antonio Rubio and Daniel Geale, among others.
Golovkin is coming off a TKO victory against Willie Monroe last month at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Golovkin is known for knocking out his opponents in 30 of his 33 pro fights.
