Reigning WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin defended his title with a TKO victory over Willie Monroe Saturday at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Golovkin, who is unbeaten in 33 pro fights, dominated the bout which ended in a TKO victory for the top middleweight titlist.
The 33-year-old champion from Karagandy, Kazakhstan dropped Monroe twice in the second round but was unable to finish the Rochester, New York native, who fought gallantly despite the odds in favor of the Kazakh.
In the fourth round, Monroe staggered Golovkin by a series of punches with some power shots landing on Golovkin's head.
It was a short-lived rally though as Golovkin dropped him again early in the sixth round. Later Monroe decided he had enough and told the referee to stop the fight. Jack Reiss, the third man in the ring stopped the fight 45 seconds into the round.
“I asked him if he wanted to continue, and he said, ‘I’m done,’ ” Reiss said.
He’s strong,” Monroe said. “In the second round, we were in motion and he hit me with a good shot,” he added.
Golovkin was confident he will win the fight, noting that he had scored two knock downs in the early round.
“I felt very strong tonight,” said Golovkin, who has won 30 of his 33 pro fights via KO.. “I knocked him down twice but I didn’t want an easy round the next round. I wanted to keep working in the fight.”
With the win, Golovkin is now targeting either Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez and hopes the fight could happen on Cinco de Mayo.
“I don’t want easy fights,” Golovkin said. “I’m ready now. Not the future, but now. I want to fight Canelo or Cotto. I want to fight them now. After Canelo or Cotto, then Andre Ward can go.” He later said he thought it would be a good fight for Cinco de Mayo in 2016, when major bouts are often held.
Golovkin (also know as GGG or triple G) is coming off a TKO win against Martin Murray last February
