Porter (24-1-1, 15 Kos) will clash with his fellow boxer from Ohio Adrien Broner (30-1-0,22KOs), who has won three straight fights since losing to Marcos Maidana in 2013.
Both fighters are aiming for a lucrative fight against Mayweather, who is returning to the ring on Sept.12 following his unanimous decision win against Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao last May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Porter has served as Pacquiao’s sparring partner when the Filipino boxing star was training for his fight against Miguel Cotto back in 2009.
In the buildup to the Kell Brook fight last year, Porter had already Mayweather in mind for his next fight but having lost to Brook via a majority decision, he needs to win convincingly against Broner in order to land in the Mayweather shortlist of opponents for his Sept. 12 fight.
“Yes, Floyd Mayweather is on the clock, we’re all hoping we’re next in line,” Porter said before losing to Kell Brook last year.
Porter, who was unbeaten when he fought Brook in England last year said he is looking forward to an exciting fight against Broner next weekend.
“I’ve been looking forward to this fight since it was announced,” said the former IBF welterweight champion. “It’s a big, exciting time for boxing. I’m very pleased and honored to be a part of it. [This] is one of the most anticipated fights that I could remember for a long time,” Porter said.
“I’m the strongest fighter that Adrien Broner will ever get into the ring with. I know he’s got more fights as a professional than me but that doesn’t mean he’s got more experience than me. We do all our fighting in the gym, prior to the fight,” Porter said.
Scheduled for 12 rounds, the Broner-Porter bout is a non-title fight and whoever wins will either have a crack at Mayweather or go for another title fight toward the end of the year.
