Former L.A. King Mike Richards charged with drug offence by RCMP

Richards, 30, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, which the RCMP say was discoverd in his possession on June 17 at the border crossing at Emerson, Manitoba, about 95 kilmetres south of Winnipeg. On that date he was arrested and released and now today he has been formally charged.

He’s been the subject of speculation over the past year or more over off-ice issues. The native of Kenora, Ont. was let go and his contract terminated by the Kings in late June, with the club saying they did so because of a “material breach” of the contract. It is likely the Kings knew of the incident at the border before making their decision to end their association with Richards.

The NHLPA has filed a grievance with the league over the move by the Kings. Richards’ contract, originally for 12 years and $69 million, was signed while he was still with the Flyers and had 5 years and $22 million left on it when it was terminated.

He spent 10 years in the NHL and has 179 goals, 303 assists for 482 points in 710 games. In the postseason he has 26 goals and 87 points.

The strong two-way forward’s play fell off last season and he was sent to the AHL and never regained an NHL spot. Richards has won two world junior gold medals for Canada and was on the 2010 Canadian Olymipic champion team. With the Kings he was part of both their Stanley Cup wins, in 2012 and 2014.

RCMP did not give details on the drug Richards was alleged to have been caught with. His first court appearance is scheduled for September 10.
