Former WBC & WBO Bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico is set to face unbeaten featherweight challenger and fellow Mexican Jorge Lara on April 30 in the undercard of Berto-Ortiz fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Montiel, who was on an eight-fight winning streak since losing to Victor Terrazas in 2011, lost his last title bout to Lee Selby of Britain last year.
“This is a great opportunity for me to show that I still belong at the highest level of boxing. This is a tough fight. I will be facing a young undefeated fighter who is hungry to prove himself and I know how that feels, because I was in shoes once,” said Montiel who has won world titles at 112, 115 and 118 pounds," Montiel said.
Montiel will be facing a tough challenger in Lara, who is a southpaw with a 66 percent knockout rating.
"I will be ready to give the fans a great fight. This is the type of fight that I need to win, so I can get another opportunity to fight for a world championship and that’s what why I still in boxing,” he added.
In 2011, Montiel figured in a stunning second round knockout loss to Nonito Donaire which cost him his WBC & WBO Bantamweight titles.
Donaire and Montiel showed mutual respect in the first round by having a feel of each other but Donaire was seen clearly as the aggressor and found his target in the middle of the round.
By the second round, both fighters loosened up a little. The end came when Donaire landed a left hook that sent Montiel to the canvas. He struggled to get up and as the referee gave him another chance to keep fighting. However, Donaire was not to be denied his defining moment as he continued pummeling Montiel to force stoppage of the fight.
Donaire, who is facing Zsolt Bedak of Hungary on Saturday in Cebu City Philippines, is putting his WBO super bantamweight title on the line.
In the main event, former Mayweather foes Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz will slug it out for the second time. The undercard also features two light heavyweight fighters Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez and Thomas "Top Dog" Williams Jr.
