Floyd Mayweather to fight again if price is right

Mayweather, who retired after his farewell fight against Andre Berto in September last year, said he his keeping himself busy with his self-imposed task of promoting young fighters under his Mayweather Promotions banner.

“As of now, I’m happy with being retired,” Mayweather said. “A lot of fighters have to box. I don’t have to box. I don’t get the urge to go to the boxing gym. My urge is giving back to the sport now, helping [promote] the young fighters.

But in a recent event where he talked about his successful boxing career after receiving another “Fighter of the Year” award from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), he surprised everyone in attendance with a revelation about his career path.

“For the right price, I may come back.” said Mayweather, who talked about his recent business ventures and how successful they are.

The price that Mayweather is talking about will actually come from the revenue that will be generated in a fight that will sell in the pay-per-view (PPV) market like the one that he did with Pacquiao which generated over 4.5 million buys.

A fight that sells on PPV will allow the promoter to give or pay what Mayweather refer to as the “right price.” It cannot be denied that no one else among the current lineup of elite challengers is capable of generating the desired revenue except Pacquiao.

There is no doubt a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch can generate at least half of what they did in their first fight. However, Mayweather did not say what exactly is the “right price” he had in mind in dollars term.

“People said I was scared, a coward, to fight Manny Pacquiao. Everyone can have their own opinion. I always said, ‘If it’s meant to happen, it’ll happen.’ At one particular time, that fight was worth $60 million. I waited until the time was right, when things were on my terms and we were the A side and we could do things our way, we turned that into a $600 million fight.”

Mayweather has been inactive for about nine months since he fought Andre Berto last September while Pacquiao’s last fight was in April this year.

Both fighters have now bared their intention to return to the ring soon.
