It will be Nietes’ first fight in the US as part of the Philippine-based ALA Promotions powerhouse card featuring Filipino rising professional boxing stars.
Nietes will stake his WBO and The Ring light flyweight title against Alejo (21-3-0), who scored 21 straight wins since losing to Jesus Limones in 2012.
“I’m very happy because I’ve been given the opportunity to fight in the US and finally showcase my talent there,” said Nietes, who will be the main attraction in the Pinoy Pride 33: “Filipinos Contra Latinos,” a long-running series featuring Filipino boxers against mostly Mexican fighters.
Nietes is the longest-reigning Filipino flyweight titlist after breaking Gabriel “Flash” Elorde’s reign as the longest-reigning Filipino champion.
Michael Aldeguer, President of Cebu, Philippine-based ALA Promotions is happy about his company’s successful entry in the US market as he looks forward to more exciting shows featuring ALA fighters that include Nietes, Albert Pagara, Mark Magsayo and Jason Pagara.
“This is something that we have always planned for in the past years. We felt that something had to happen,” Aldeguer said.
As part of his training for his US debut fight, Nietes plans to do sparring rounds with Fil-Am Brian Viloria, who is challenging unbeaten Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzales in the undercard of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight at the Madison Square Garden in New York on Oct. 17.
