Donaire confident of defending WBO title against Bedak (Includes interview and first-hand account)

The press conference was hosted by veteran sports writer and commentator Ronnie Nathanielsz and presided over by ABS-CBN Consultant Peter Musngi and ABS-CBN Integrated Sports Division Head Dino Jacinto M. Laurena.

Donaire denied an earlier report that he could be taking Bedak for granted. He told Digital Journal that he has never been overconfident but admitted that he is confident in defending his title against Bedak.

Bedak (25-1-0) is on his 10-fight winning streak since his lone career loss to Wilfredo Vasquez at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico in May 2010.

While Bedak has a relatively low knockout rating of 31 per cent, he is known for winning his fights on points.

Early this month Donaire talked a little bit about his impression of the Hungarian fighter and he seems to downplay Bedak’s punching power, saying the Hungarian has a pretty decent power and speed but he is more of a technical fighter who just want to win on points.

During the press conference, Donaire’s father-trainer Nonito Sr., said Bedak may not survive the prevailing temperature in the country and predicted that the Hungarian challenger will give up in exhaustion later in the 12-round title fight.

Donaire also denied reports that he isn’t fully glued to his training for the Bedak fight as he was seen relaxing with celebrity friend Steph Curry at the Oracle Arena during the GSW vs Dallas Mavericks game.

“Even in the middle of training for his April 23 defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight crown against Zsolt Bedak, the 33-year-old Filipino found time to show his support to the history-seeking DubNation by watching the defending NBA champions in their game against the Dallas Mavericks at the Oracle Arena on Saturday (Manila time),” Gerry Ramos of Spin.ph writes.

But Donaire explained that part of the reason why he was seen with Curry in the NBA game has something to do with his task of promoting his upcoming fight with Bedak.

After clarifying reports about his seemingly overconfident and relaxed approach to his training for the Bedak fight, Donaire invited everyone to watch his title fight against the 32-year-old Hungarian at the Cebu City Sports Complex, Cebu City, Philippines and on ABS-CBN free TV on April 24 at 8:30 a.m. with prime time telecast on ABS-CBN Sports + Action on the same day at 12:00 noon.

In the supporting bouts are rising Filipino boxers Jason Pagara, who will face Miguel Zamudio of Mexico and Mark Magsayo, who is set to preserve his unbeaten record against Chris Avalos of Lancaster, CA.
