Diego “Golden Kid” de la Hoya, a cousin legendary boxer and owner of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar de la Hoya, will face former world title challenger Jesus “Estrella” Ruiz on Sept. 4 for the vacant WBC Youth Featherweight Title
The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds and will be televised live on Viernes de Boxeo Estelar on Estrella TV at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT from Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.
The “Golden Kid” is unbeaten in 10 professional fights and is coming off a unanimous decision against Ramiro Robles last February.
Diego, who is the son of Oscar de la Hoya’s father’s brother, is being trained by Joel Diaz, the current trainer of former WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley.
At 21, Diego has an impressive amateur background and has been known in the ring for his being a natural aggressor. His cousin Oscar is very much impressed with his fighting style.
“He’s very good. He’s a people-pleaser,” Oscar De La Hoya said. “He loves fighting. And when he gets hit, you can see the fire in his eyes. He wants revenge. He reminds me of me,” he added.
Ruiz (34-6-5, 23 KOs), who is from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico is coming off a TKO victory over Saul Hermosillo last March following his TKO loss to Leo Santa Cruz in in January this year.
Oscar is confident his cousin will win his first title fight on Friday.
