On August 16, in Rio de Janeiro, Drouin won the final with an incredible jump of 2.38 meters, which he cleared on his first try. He bested Mutaz Essa Barshim who took home the silver with 2.36 meters, and Ukranian high jumper Bohdan Bondarenko who won the bronze with 2.33 meters.
With his Olympic win, Drouin is the first Canadian to win gold in a field event since the 1932 Olympic Games that were held in Los Angeles, when Duncan McNaughton won in the high jump.
In addition, Drouin was the 2015 world champion in the high jump, where he cleared 2.34 meters at the World Championships in Beijing.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Barshim and Drouin both were tied for the bronze medal, along with British high jumper Robert Grabarz.
Drouin’s personal best in high jump is at 2.40 meters, which he set in April of 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa.
