Results from the live Pay-Per-View fight between Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO) and Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO) from the world famous Madison Square Garden in New York City.
All eyes were set on the boxing world as Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez entered Madison Square Garden.
From the very first round of the fight Cotto was in control. In the middle of the first round Cotto landed a great left hook to the body that completely took away the legs of Martinez. Cotto would go on to knock Martinez down three times in the round, which set the tone for the entire fight.
Cotto for a majority of the fight stayed in the middle of the ring. Every time Martinez would try to land a shot Cotto would go on the attack and push Martinez back. Cotto would stay in the middle of the ring until the 6th round. In the 6th round Cotto changed the tempo of the fight and started boxing more.
Cotto would now circle Martinez, moving inside to land punches, and back out when Martinez would try to land. By this time in the fight Martinez looked to have his legs back. Martinez seemed to be moving around a lot better, but he still could not get anything started.
This fight was all Cotto; he did a great job of dictating the pace of the fight, controlling everything that happened in the ring. Martinez just did not look himself — he was moving slow and was very flat footed for much of the fight.
In the 9th round Cotto would again change the tempo of the fight, as he once again pressed Martinez. Cotto was again forcing Martinez to back up, attacking Martinez on the ropes. Cotto landed a lot of good shot in the round with his straight right hand and left hook.
After the round Martinez's corner decided to stop the fight, not allowing Martinez to come out for the 10th round, making Cotto the winner by TKO.
Cotto's goal coming into the fight was to become the first ever Puerto Rican fighter to hold a title in four different weight classes. Cotto completely dominated and controlled the tempo of the entire fight. Cotto fought a very smart fight, he never did more than he needed to. Cotto chose his spots correctly and landed shots when he had an opening. Cotto did everything to near perfection in this fight, which is why he is now, not only the WBC Middleweight Champion, but the first ever Puerto Rican to hold a title in four weight classes.
