Nantucket - Hockey player Corey Griffin died in a diving accident after celebrating that the Ice Bucket Challenge was going viral. He was one of the amazing people behind starting this challenge to help those with the debilitating disease.
Celebs everywhere have started doing the Ice Bucket Challenge and former hockey player Corey Griffin was behind starting this viral challenge. It has been done to raise money and awareness for ALS.
Witnesses explained what they saw when he died saying, "Griffin had jumped off the Juice Guys building, at 44 Straight Wharf, into the water where he floated to the surface. Griffin then went under water again not resurfacing." There was an off-duty lifeguard on the scene, but he was unable to save his life.
A close friend of Corey was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease). This is where the idea of the Ice Bucket Challenge came about and he wanted everyone to donate to the cause, but also raise awareness for it. Reports are that $100,000 had been raised for Team FrateTrain. Corey wanted to celebrate and this is what lead to his death.
Corey Griffin will be remembered by many for his Ice Bucket Challenge. This is still spreading through the power of social media. Several celebrities including Carrie Underwood, LeBron James, Bill Gates, Luke Bryan, Demi Lovato and Andy Cohen have already dumped water on their head for a great cause. Even Toronto Mayor Rob Ford got in the act over the weekend.
