College Football Rankings: AP Top-25 heading into week five

Alabama is still king as the Crimson Tide secured the number one ranking with a lopsided 48-0 victory over Kent State. The Crimson Tide have one of the top defenses in the nation and will remain on top until someone can knock them from their pedestal.

Ohio State had a week off after a big win at Oklahoma and remain second in the nation. The Buckeyes received four first place votes, far from the 50 for the Tide, but with continued success, they’ll get a shot come playoff time and Urban Meyers has a good track record against Nick Saban.

The best story of the 2016 season is happening in Louisville as the Cardinals are third in the latest polls, but despite a hot start to the year, an ACC showdown this week against Clemson will give fans and experts a better idea of just how good this squad can be and if they have the goods to win a championship.

Michigan and Clemson round out the top five and for good reason. The Wolverines have scored over 40 points in every game and will need that offense when they face number eight Wisconsin this weekend. The Tigers clash against the Cardinals will separate the men from the boys and these two games will have a major impact on next weeks rankings and who stays in contention for the NCAA Football playoffs.

Stanford and Washington are both inside the top-10 and they meet in the biggest PAC 12 game of the year. This game is a playoff as the winner will keep hopes alive for a January game, but the loser won’t have the strength of schedule to get back into contention for a chance to play the big boy programs.

The best news in college football this weekend was the emergence of Boise State as the returned to the AP top-25. The Broncos are 3-0 on the year and along with San Diego State, represent the smaller schools in the nation that are ranked and bring attention to those teams not in the power five conferences.
