Dublin - The Chilean women’s national field hockey team continued its remarkable participation in the second round of the Women's FIH World Hockey League tournament in Ireland. The South Americans will face the Canadian team seeking to advance to the semifinals.
The third group stage of the second round of the 2014-2015 Women's Hockey World League tournament in Dublin, Ireland, organized by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), runs from March 14 to 24.
The Chilean team, playing in Pool B, was undefeated in the group stage. They beat Lithuania (4-0), Belarus (2-1) and Austria (6-0). In the first playoff game, the team directed by coach Ronald Stein showed talent and effectiveness by soundly defeating Turkey 14-2.
The Canadian women's national field hockey team, led by coach Ian Rutledge, competing in Pool A, suffered a 1-2 defeat against the host team, Ireland, and achieved victory over Turkey (5-0), Ukraine (3-1), and Austria (5-1).
Chile (goal difference 11) and Canada (goal difference 6) will play on Saturday 21st in quest of a spot to the third stage of the World FIH Hockey League. In the other playoff game, the host team (Ireland) will face the Belarus national team.
The Chilean team is 20 in the ranking of the World Women's Hockey League while the Canadian national team is in place 22. The Netherlands, Australia and Argentina occupy the top three places in the ranking.
The series of games in Dublin (March 14 – 24) are part of the three stages of the Second Round. The other two stages were played in Montevideo, Uruguay (Feb. 14-22, 2015) and in New Delhi, India (Mar. 7-15). The top two finishers from Montevideo (Uruguay and Italy), New Delhi (India and Poland) and Dublin, qualify for Round 3, being joined by the highest ranked of the third placed finishers from those three events. The seven top teams of the World League, along with the host country and five continental champions, qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
