Cato was making just his third start of his career, but the youngster showed great poise when his team needed it most. The 23-year-old finished the game completing 23 of 34 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown. Cato was also the leading rusher for the Als’ with 30 yards on just four carries.
The victory improved Montreal’s record to 2-2 on the year and back in the hunt in the tough East Division. While their young star has received plenty of credit for a solid start, the defense was the main reason for the win over the Tiger-Cats as they forced four turnovers and harassed Hamilton signal caller Zach Collaros all night.
Collaros finished the game 27-42 for 296 yards and a score and added another 20 yards on the ground, but three interceptions along with three sacks made it a difficult night for the 26-year-old.
Boris Bede was solid, connecting on three field goals, but the biggest play of the night came in the third quarter when Alouettes wide receiver S.J. Green made a circus catch for a touchdown that gave his squad a lead they would never relinquish.
Green had five receptions for 56 yards and fellow starter Fred Stamps had a game high 119 yards on seven catches to help their young signal caller.
The victory for Montreal was some payback after the Tiger-Cats won the East Final 40-24 last year. This was the first of three meetings between the two franchises this season and it could set the tone for the rest of the 2015 CFL season as both teams are expected to challenge for a spot in this years playoffs.
