article imageCetina Adventure showcases Dalmatian beauty, goes international

By Paul Bradbury     Jun 9, 2014 in Sports
Sinj - The natural beauty and adventure tourism potential of one of Croatia's least discovered regions is highlighted in the annual Cetina Adventure race.
With summer temperatures inching their way to over 30 degrees in Croatia on June 7, 2014, it was an early start for competitors of the fourth Cetina Adventure race in Sinj, a gruelling event with four disciplines over 115 kilometres, an event which was attended by Digital Journal.
The event, which started in 2011, has quickly risen in popularity to become one of the premier adventure sporting occasions in the regional calendar, and the 2014 race was notable for the first international competitors from Slovenia, as well as a sharp rise in female competitors. In all there were six two-women teams, up from one last year.

As is now becoming a tradition in Sinj, the race started early on Saturday morning, next to the Piccadilly nightclub, whose early morning dancers comprised a school graduation party; the contrast between the late night revellers and the motivated athletes has become a symbol of the race.

The race has been modified each year, and competitors this year faced a 115 kilometre challenge, with a combination of trekking, canyoning, kayaking and cycling. Digital Journal spent the day at Cetina Adventure 2013 in the company of top regional photographer Ilija Veselica, and Veselica was again on hand to record some of the race's finest images.

It is a region which begins just 20 kilometres away from the beaches and popular Dalmatian coastline, and Sinj can be reached from the Dalmatian capital of Split in half an hour by car. Although the region is close to the coast, one enters a total different world from the sea and sun tourism which has become Croatia's tourism trademark, and the tourism potential of inland Dalmatia has yet to be fully exploited.

The race over, the competitors reconvened the following day for a traditional celebratory meal of lamb on the spit in the picturesque village of Lucane, close to Split. A world away from busy city life, Lucane is a prime example of the raw beauty of the region which has as yet been unspoilt by mankind.

The barbecue, held in the home of one of event sponsors, held further surprises for this Digital Journalist, who was invited into the family home. A stone house on the outside, the interior had been renovated and furnished in the traditional way, with many of the items on the walls and in the room dating back more than a century. Just one more fascinating discovery in one of Europe's last undiscovered tourism frontiers.
