article imageTrevor Linden fires John Tortorella, news on Canucks GM search

By Marcus Hondro     May 1, 2014 in Sports
Vancouver - Today's news out of Vancouver Canuck-land comes as no surprise so it's best treated briefly: new president Trever Linden fired coach John Tortorella and his assistant, Mike Sullivan, and will start interviewing candidates for the G.M. job soon.
"I have a great deal of respect for John and Mike and what they have accomplished in their coaching careers," Linden said. "They're good people and good coaches and I want to wish them and their families all the best in their future endeavours."
Linden said the expected when he spoke of what the direction the team would be heading in his: "Today is about the future and the goal of getting this team back to the Stanley Cup playoffs," he continued
"My vision it to bring exciting, winning hockey back to Rogers Arena with the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup. I came into this with a rather neutral position but after thoroughly evaluating every facet of the organization, the more I looked at the situation I felt that a change was necessary and a fresh start was needed."
And finally, he spoke about the search for a G.M. and, typical of the man that Linden is, he was positive: "I'm encouraged by the managerial search," he told media.
"I think I've gotten less pushback on timing. I've got a real strong candidate list and I will be starting the interview process next week so I'm encouraged by that...obviously it's important that the manager has a great deal of input on the coaching direction so that would be the ideal situation. Things happen quickly and change quickly."
That's the precis but in what promises to be a summer of big changes for the Canucks, in management and on the roster, so there is much, much more to come over these following days, weeks and months.
And that, Canuck fans know, is not news.
