Alvarez and Smith are set to face each other in the ring this Saturday night at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas. Smith is putting his WBO light middleweight title on the line.
According to Joe Gallagher, the trainer of Smith, there will be no fight that will take place if Alvarez weighs even a pound over the contracted weight of 154 pounds.
I many instances, the fight is allowed to proceed by ring officials if the parties agree to a specified amount of money as ‘penalty’ for every excess pound but this time Smith is not bent on accepting extra payment for the excess weight. Instead he intends to collect the full amount due him for the infraction.
“I’m sure they are going to be professional and I don’t expect slip-ups at the weigh-in. said Gallagher, who clarified that Smith’s WBO title won’t on the line if Alvarez can not make the weight.
“I expect Alvarez to make the weight at 154lb but, to let everyone know, if Saul Alvarez doesn’t make the weight there will be no fight,” he said
“Liam Smith is world champion and he is here to defend it,” he added.
Alvarez, who is coming off a TKO win against Amir Khan, has not fought at 154 in at least five of his recent fights where he weighed a pound higher at 155 pounds.
The Mexican boxing star, who is favored to win over the unbeaten Briton, has been heavily criticized for picking Smith instead of Gennady Golovkin with whom he had an unofficial arrangement for a title fight this year.
Smith (23-0-1,13 KOs), who hails from Liverpool, England is coming off a second round KO win over Predrag Radošević last June at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, England.
