article imageBoston Celtics Rumors: Marcus Smart top option in 2014 NBA Draft?

By Larry Seely     Feb 26, 2014 in Sports
Boston - Boston Celtics general Manager Danny Ainge has made several moves over the last 12 months and it's all leading to this summer as the storied franchise looks to get back as one of the top teams in the NBA.
Ainge has rid the team of some big contracts, allowing him and his staff to add plenty of new talent to the roster this summer and it will all start with the 2014 Draft.
The latest mocks have several different scenarios and they all depend on what management does after the season is finished. Trade rumors involving Rajon Rondo have been buzzing on social media all year and if he is moved, Brian Mazique of Bleacher Report suggests the Celtics take Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart with their top pick.
Smart reminds scouts of Rondo, but with more game on the offensive side of the court. A trade would give the team more room to add one or two big name free agents this summer and create some optimism for the fans.
Another option and one that seems more likely is adding Julius Randle from Kentucky. The young power forward has dominated in the paint for the Wildcats this season and would give Boston some much needed rebounding help in the paint, but also a good scoring option to pair with Rondo for the next 5+ years.
This summer will be interesting as Ainge has put all its resources into adding big-time talent for 2014, but no matter what direction they go in the NBA Draft, adding a veteran scorer will be a must of next year could look much like this season and that could cost the GM his job.
