“I can’t. I don’t want to violate the law. But I’ll definitely come over during the elections to give him moral support,” Arum said.
Despite criticisms that Pacquiao isn’t fit to become a senator, Arum believes the fighting congressman from Sarangani will be a good senator if he is elected to the 24-member Senate of the Philippines.
Pacquiao is an incumbent congressman on his second term representing the lone district of Sarangani Province in Southern Philippines.
“He (Pacquiao) will be a good senator,”Arum told Philstar.com in a phone interview a few days ago.
Even before filing his Certificate of Candidacy last week, Pacquiao told the electorate that he will retire from boxing to concentrate on his work as senator if he is elected by the people in next year’s national elections.
“It’s one of the reasons why he wants to devote himself completely to his duties as a senator – no more boxing, no more basketball,” Arum said.
“He’ll be a full-time senator,” he added.
Arum’s unsolicited advice to Pacquiao as election campaign draws near: “Just be Manny Pacquiao. And for him to explain what his dreams are for the people of the Philippines. And how he’s going to be an advocate for them.”
“Don’t let any of these politicians change him into something that he’s not. Just be Manny Pacquiao,” Arum added.
Arum is making arrangement for Pacquiao’s next fight following his loss to Floyd Mayweather last May in a supper fight that made over $500 million in revenues, the highest-grossing fight in boxing history.
Among others, Arum has listed four possible challengers for Pacquiao’s next fight which include Amir Khan, Terence Crawford, Kell Brook and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Pacquiao is set to resume training before the end of the year for his return fight in March or April next year.
