article imageBig 12 Football: Updated power rankings through week five

By Larry Seely     Oct 1, 2016 in Sports
The Big 12 Conference has struggled at the start of the 2016 season and despite some exciting games in week five, it will be tough for any program to make the NCAA Football playoffs in January.
Baylor is the best and last hope, but the Bears continue to struggle against teams with a losing record. The team needed a late fourth quarter rally to beat Iowa State 45-42 on Saturday to keep their unblemished record. Ranked thirteenth heading into this weekend, they could crack the top-10 polls next week, but they will need some big wins over the second half of the season to get in position to represent this conference in the playoffs.
With Baylor holding the top spot in the power rankings, West Virginia has quietly played its way into the second best team. The Mountaineers rallied past Kansas State, 17-16 on Saturday, improving to 4-0 on the year and likely to crack the top-25 polls released later this week.
The Big 12 had two other ranked schools suffer losses on Saturday as TCU dropped a 52-46 shootout at the hands of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State used a strong second half effort to beat Texas. These types of games are what hurt this conference with strength of schedule and could be the reason no programs from the conference get a shot at winning a national championship.
Texas Tech and their pass-happy offense are now 3-1 on the year after a big 55-19 victory over Kansas in week five. The Red Raiders are another team that could push their way into the top-25 this week, but they must play better and more consistent football against the better teams on their schedule to get the pollsters to notice this squad.
The Sooners were supposed to be the savior this season, but their struggles have hurt the conference. Texas started hot, but have cooled down with a couple tough losses and Oklahoma State and their fans are still trying to get over the loss to Central Michigan. Baylor could still make a late run, but they need to win every game left in 2016 and have some blowouts to impress the voters.
