The Longhorns had a big upset win over Notre Dame last weekend and the team followed that up with a solid 41-7 victory over UTEP on Saturday, but despite the strong start, this squad isn’t on top of the power rankings heading into week three.
Oklahoma was ranked third in the nation before losing to Houston to start the 2016 campaign, but the Sooners showed their class this weekend topping Louisiana Monroe 59-17. The Sooners can make a big statement next weekend when the face fourth ranked Ohio State, but another lose will blow any chance this program has of making the NCAA Football Playoffs and could hurt the rest of the conference when it comes to strength of schedule.
Baylor is trying to pickup the pieces after a tremulous off season. The Bears offense has been inconsistent, despite scoring 95 points in their first two games, but the defense has allowed just 20 points and for that reason this team has moved to number two in the conference power rankings and could move into the top-10 in the nation before long.
West Virginia is the only other team with a perfect 2-0 record. The Mountaineers are strong on offense, but playing in the high-scoring Big 12 could be tough on a weak defense. BYU comes to town next weekend and that will give the coaches and fans a better idea of what to expect from this squad for the rest of the 2016 season.
Oklahoma State and TCU both suffered heart-breaking losses on Saturday and in the case of the Cowboys, controversy of the defeat could haunt the team for the next few weeks. Both teams can play against anyone in the country, but more consistency is needed on both sides of the ball for these two programs to rebound.
