Concepcion is coming off three straight victories and a draw since losing by TKO to Mikey Garcia of Puerto Rico at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, San Juan, Puerto Rico in March 2012.
Concepcion, who is known for his deadly right hand power shots, was inching towards capturing a major title when he was disqualified during his bout against Steven Luevano in 2009 for hitting Luevano twice after the end of the seventh round.
Referee Jay Nedy disqualified Concepcion for the flagrant foul despite protest from Concepcion’s trainer Freddie Roach.
“It (late punches) was not intentional. But the disqualification was justified,” said Concepcion trainer Freddie Roach, who even had a heated debate with Nady at the Filipino’s corner.
Concepcion had another opportunity to land a major title when he fought Juan Manuel Lopez in July 2010. The fight ended after Lopez knocked out Conception in the second round.
It has been a hard battle for Concepcion to get back in top shape following his loss to Luevano and Lopez. But after losing to Mikey Garcia, Concepcion has been undefeated in four outings.
Fundi (27-12-3, 11 KOs) has fought once the Philippines against Filipino Richie Mepranum in 2008. losing via a unanimous decision.
Concepcion believes that a win against Fundi could bring him back to the circle of elite fighters in his weight limit and hopefully to figure in another title fight within the year or early next year.
