Bayless is third man in the ring at Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) selected Bayless over three other shortlisted veteran boxing referees for what appears to be the world’s richest fight in boxing history.

NSAC also appointed the three judges who will do the scoring including veteran boxing judges Burt Clements, Dave Moretti and Glenn Feldman.

For the assignment, Bayless will receive $25,000 while the judges will be paid $20,000 each. Bayless’ professional fee is believed to be the highest ever for a boxing referee.

Bayless has refereed both Mayweather and Pacquiao fights in the past including the Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton, Oscar de la Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather, Ricky Hatton vs. Paulie Malignaggi, Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito, and Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto fights among others.

The selection of Bayless drew quick reaction from legendary boxer-turned promoter Oscar de la Hoya even before the announcement reached him, saying the appointment favors Mayweather.

“I think it favors Mayweather, absolutely,” De La Hoya told Yahoo Sports. “There is no secret about that,” he said.

“I had heard Kenny Bayless was going to be the referee and that’s one point for Mayweather right there. If you notice every fight Mayweather has had with Kenny Bayless, the referee should break them up if both hands are tied up and they’re not throwing punches. If you notice, for instance with Maidana, when they got in close, right away Kenny Bayless would break them up,” said de la Hoya, who fought and lost to both Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Less than two weeks before the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, both Mayweather and Pacquiao have announced their readiness for the “Fight of the Century.”

The fight is still tilted in favor of Mayweather 2-1 but it is possible it will even up before the day of the fight.
