Baltimore’s Camden Yards in lockdown Saturday due to violence

This was not your typical American League East contest. Just before the game was about to head into extra innings, a public announcement was displayed on the electronic billboard inside the stadium. The sign read, “Due to an ongoing public safety issue, the Mayor of Baltimore City and the BCPD have asked all fans to remain inside the ballpark until further notice. Thank you.”

Angered protesters damaged vehicles, store windows were smashed, and cars were set ablaze. The violence escalated to the point where Freddie’s twin sister spoke out for the first time since the death of her brother on April 12. She pleaded to the protesters and said, “Can you all please, please stop the violence? Freddie Gray would not want this. Freddie’s father and mother did not want nobody… violence does not get justice.”

Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said they considered sleeping at the park to avoid the mayhem. However, the lockdown ended during the tenth inning. Switch-hitting infielder for the Orioles, Chris Davis, addressed the situation, “We understand what’s going on and we understand people are upset, and rightfully so. But I think there’s a constructive way to protest and there’s a destructive way to protest. I think we’d rather see people get their point across without damaging anything or put anybody’s lives in jeopardy. I hope this blows over and we can get past it and move forward, because this is too good of a city for this to happen.”

Orioles errors allowed the Red Sox to tie the game in the ninth and take the lead in the tenth. Baltimore ended their five-game skid when David Lough whacked his first walk-off home run and the O’s won the game 5-4 in 10 innings.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake stated, “We also gave those who wish to destroy space to do that.” She went on to say that much of the violence was from agitators that were “out-of-towners” and not Baltimore residents.

Baltimore police said they have received credible death threats from notoriously violent local gang members. The “Black Guerilla Family,” “Bloods,” and the “Crips” have allegedly formed an alliance to “take out” Baltimore police officers.

Sunday was a day of mourning for the decedent 25-year-old’s family and friends. Pastor Jamal Bryant from the Baltimore Empowerment Temple headed up the sermon and stated, “Someone is going to have to pay… if you’re black in America, your life is always under threat.” The young man will be laid to rest Monday, but the unrest and anger will remain in the hearts and minds of the Baltimore citizenry.
