Azkals in crucial game against Uzbekistan on Sept. 8

In Asia, only four countries will qualify for the World Cup Finals and the Philippine team Azkals has a very good chance of making it to the magic four.

The Azkals have already won twice in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The team prevailed over Bahrain 2-1 last June 11 at the same venue in Bulacan and another win against Yemen 2-0 last June 16.

Uzbekistan is perceived as the strongest team in the World Cup Qualifiers but Azkals coach Thomas Dooley is confident his team will be victorious.

“Uzbekistan is the best team in our group, the most difficult team to play against,” said the American coach. “What they do is that they are not outstanding, but they are more experienced.”

“It will be a very very difficult game for us, we are totally the underdogs in that game,” he said.

Having won their last two games in the qualifiers, he is confident the team will win against Uzbekistan on Sept. 8.

“I have confidence in our team, I think that we are on the rise,” said Dooley, who took over as head coach of the team last year.

Dooley capped his playing career in 1999 with 81 caps (international starts) and 7 goals after serving as US team captain before the 1998 World Cup.

There will be four countries in Asia that will qualify for the World Cup Finals and the Azkals’ chance of making it to the magic four is looking good.

In a draw held at in Kuala Lumpur last April 14, the Philippine team was included in Group H which include Uzbekistan, Bahrain, North Korea and Yemen. Read more:
