Arizona Cardinals fill needs with solid NFL Draft

Robert Nkemdiche was consider a surefire top-5 draft pick back in December, but an off-field incident had his draft stock drop dramatically. The Cards still took the gamble and picked the defensive lineman with the 29th overall pick, a good spot for a risk-reward selection.

Nkemdiche and Chandler Jones, who was acquired after a trade with New England, will give this team some dynamic depth on the defensive line and help with both the pass rush and stopping the run.

With no second round pick, the front office used its third round selection on corner Brandon Williams from Texas A&M. The youngster has terrific skills, but a lack of experience could hinder his development for a year or two. However, his ability to play special teams will make him a valuable asset and give the secondary some much-needed depth.

Evan Boehm started all four years at center for Missouri and was team captain this past year. His experience against tough SEC competition and his football smarts makes him a great pick in the fourth round and a player that could battle for a starting job in training camp.

Many NFL experts predicted the team would take a quarterback over the weekend, but they failed to draft a signal caller, but reports have the Cardinals signing Alabama’s Jake Coker to a free agent contract.

Coker was expected to be a late round selection, but this could work to his advantage. The youngster can sit and learn behind Carson Palmer and with some development, could become the starter of the future for Arizona.

The front office did a terrific job and if the gamble on Nkemdiche works in their favor, this draft class could become a solid A-, but for now, they earn a well deserved B grade and more depth then they had at this time last year.
