Antonio Margarito wins tune-up fight against Jorge Paez Jr.

Margarito has been inactive for about four years following his loss to Miguel Cotto via TKO in a rematch in December 2011.

While he got the nod of the three judges, his performance against Paez leaves much to be desired, though it is understandable because of his long period of inactivity.

It was a give and take affair in the early rounds but halfway to the fight, Margarito absorbed a power shot from Paez that sent him to the canvas. He got up and engaged Paez to the last round for a unanimous decision.

The judges scored the fight at 95-94, 97-93 and 96-93, all in favor of Margarito.

Margarito (39-8-0, 27 KOs) has been cleared by his eye doctors to continue his boxing career after undergoing close to four years of eye therapy following his gruesome fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2010.

Margarito’s left eye was severely injured during the fight which resulted in a fractured orbital bone. Margarito had to undergo a delicate eye surgery following his loss to Pacquiao.

Less than a year after undergoing major eye surgery, Margarito fought Miguel Cotto in a rematch in 2011 but lost via TKO after the ring physician ordered the stoppage of the fight in the 10th round due to severe swelling.

While Paez landed some heavy punches on Margarito’s surgically repaired eyes, there was no visible swelling around his eyes which would indicate that he had a successful surgery which his promoter Bob Arum was worried about priior to the fight.

Because of Margarito’s sluggish performance against Paez, Arum may set up another tune-up fight Margarito before getting him in the ring for another crack at a world title possibly next year.

With the win, Margarito improved his record to 39 wins with eight losses.
