article imageAntonio Margarito makes weight limit 5 weeks before return fight

By Leo Reyes     Jan 30, 2016 in Sports
Former WBA, WBO and IBF welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is about to make it to the middleweight limit of 160 pounds for his comeback fight against Jorge Paez, Jr. set for March 5 at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico City, Distrito Federal.
Margarito has long been a middleweight fighter and he wants to make sure he hits the limit before his scheduled tune-up fight in Mexico.
Margarito (38-8-0, 27 KOs) has been cleared by his eye doctors to continue his boxing career after undergoing close to four years of eye therapy following his gruesome fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2010.
Margarito's left eye was severely injured during during the fight which resulted in a fractured orbital bone. Margarito had to undergo a delicate eye surgery following his loss to Pacquiao.
Less than a year after undergoing major eye surgery, Margarito fought Miguel Cotto in a rematch in 2011 but lost via TKO after the ring physician ordered the stoppage of the fight in the 10th round due to severe swelling.
Margarito said his body is responding well as he goes about his training for the coming tune-u fight.
"Right now I've had two weeks of sparring. To be honest I was wondered how my body was going to react and the truth is my body has answered me well. I've sparred and I feel strong. I feel very happy, very motivated. I can say that I am already at 160-162 pounds. Usually a month before my fights I was 17 pounds [over the limit] on average," Margarito told ESPN Deportes.
Paez, Jr. (33-4-1, 20 KOs) is coming off a majority decision win over Daniel Echeverria in August 2015 but lost a unanimous decision to Carlos Ocampo last November. The 28-year-old Mexican stands 5'9" with a reach of 73." Although they have the same reach, Margarito has a 2" height advantage at 5'11."
"He's a good fighter, he has talent, but the opportunities that he's had - he's fell short. I'm looking for a spectacular victory, so people are convinced and view me as a fighter who can give more. It make me happy that people want to see more of me. I've been training hard and I feel very motivated to give a great fight at the Mexico City Arena and have my hand raised at the end," Margarito said.
Margarito hopes to make to the 160 pounds rating with a victory over Paez, a step that will bring him closer to another title fight down the road.
