Khan has been inactive since his unanimous decision win against Chris Algieri in May 2015. After the Algieri fight, the British Olympic silver medalist has been pursuing a lucrative fight against Floyd Mayweather but he was junked twice in favor of Marcos Maidana.
After the Maidana fight Mayweather dumped Khan for the third time and picked Manny Pacquiao for his pre-retirement fight.
Moving on, Khan’s father, Shah, said said his camp is looking at early March for a tune-up fight though an opponent is yet to be named.
“We’re looking at a date in the first two weeks of March, but we’ve not got an opponent confirmed yet. Al Haymon is looking into it and he will come to us as soon as he has something,” said Amir’s father.
“Both fights – Garcia and Brook – could happen. There are still negotiations with Brook’s people, so nothing is confirmed. If that fight can be made, no problem, we will do that before Garcia maybe. We’re looking at a date in the first two weeks of March, but we’ve not got an opponent confirmed yet. Al Haymon is looking into it and he will come to us as soon as he has something,” he added.
Khan was knocked out by Garcia in the fourth round of their title fight in July 2012 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada,
“The Garcia fight is what Amir is looking forward to. He has always wanted that fight and the WBC have mandated it now as well,” Shah explained.
For his part, Brook has been calling out Khan for a lucrative fight at the Wembley in London but Khan urged Brook to take another fight before facing him, saying Brook is not yet on his level.
While the Rios fight would attract a bigger crowd to the venue than a showdown with Berto, it may be futile to pursue the Rios fight because of the current rift between Bob Arum, who promotes Rios, and Al Haymon, who advises Khan.
At this point, it appears Khan will be facing Berto in March for his tune-up fight.
