But in their recent unexpected meeting, it appears Mayweather was the first to take a swipe at Khan who happened to be in the same venue.
Khan and Mayweather met face-to-face during the title fight between Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California last Saturday.
Khan was seated right at the back row of Mayweather’s seat and according to Khan the retired unbeaten fighter looked back and he said: “is this the guy [referring to Garcia] that beat you? Is this the guy that beat you?” Then they started an exchange of heated shouting match that led to a commotion.
“He then started to shout quite loudly and started some commotion, and everything. Literally, I shut him up. I put him in his place. I said ‘look if you want to fight, I’m here, Khan told Elie Seckback.
“He just started screaming, I couldn’t understand half the stuff he was saying. I remember him bringing the money, his money in, saying ‘look, I make 300 million a fight, you can’t touch me. No one can be like me, I’m the best.’ I think he’s just living in his own hype really,” Khan added.
In 2014, Mayweather and Khan have been on similar situations as the British boxing star was trying to land a lucrative fight against Mayweather but the the world’s highest-paid athlete passed on Khan twice in favor of Marcos Maidana.
After the Maidana rematch, Khan thought it was already his turn but Mayweather decided to accept Manny Pacquiao’s challenge instead, leaving Khan with an empty bag for the nth time.
Khan has been declared by the WBC a mandatory challenger to Garcia following his unanimous decision win over Robert Guerrero.
The WBC welterweight title was vacated by Mayweather when he retired from boxing after beating Khan’s former sparring partner Andre Berto to tie Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 career record last September.
