American best-selling author Mitch Albom has traveled to the typhoon-ravaged areas of Tacloban City in the Philippines to help rebuild destroyed libraries there in cooperation with National Bookstore, the Philippines' biggest bookstore.
Albom pledged $160,000 with his own initial donation of $10,000 to kick off the project while the National Bookstore Foundation will raise a counterpart fund of the same amount until the goal is met.
Aside from his own donation to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, the best selling author also donated 40 fishing boats to enable fishermen to recover from the devastation.
Super typhoon Haiyan (Typhoon Yolanda in Phl) has been tagged by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), an agency of the US Department of Defense based in Hawaii, as the world's strongest cyclone last year.
Typhoon Haiyan flattened Tacloban City and adjoining areas in Central Philippines last November, killing over 6,000 people and destroying vital infrastructure in the affected areas.
Albom is just one of the international celebrities who made a trip to the typhoon devastated areas in Central Philippines to offer their help and humanitarian support to the victims of the monster typhoon.
Early this month, football legend David Beckham visited Tacloban City as an Ambassador of Goodwill of the United Nations Children's Fund ( UNICEF), bringing cheers to the children who were traumatized by the horrific sights of devastation.
In January, former world boxing champion Shane Mosley, who became popular in the Philippines when he fought Manny Pacquiao in 2011, also visited the country with a group of promoters who are trying to raise funds for the typhoon victims.
Albom, a New Jersey native, made a name as a sports journalist covering basketball and other popular sports, later becoming a sports columnist for Detroit Free Press.
Aside from sports writing, Albom became a radio host as sports commentator and later moved on to television, appearing regularly on ESPN's The Sports Reporters and ESPN SportsCenter. Later he became a playwright and a musician.
Albom has authored several books in the field of sports including Bo: Life, Laughs, Lessons of a College Football Legend, and Fab Five: Basketball, Trash Talk, The American Dream, which became a bestseller.
Albom's bestsellers are Tuesdays with Morrie, The Five People You Meet in Heaven,For One More Day, and Have a Little Faith, among others.
