World welterweight boxing titles from three sanctioning bodies will be at stake May 2 when competing champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao meet in a long-awaited championship the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
Mayweather is putting his two welterweight titles on the line (WBA and WBC) while Pacquiao will be defending his WBO welterweight title, which he won from Timothy Bradley in a rematch last year.
Mayweather got his WBA welterweight title when he knocked out Victor Ortiz in a controversial fight in 2011 while his WBC welterweight title came in May 2012 with a unanimous decision against Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.
The winner of the May 2 fight will wear three belts from each of the three sanctioning bodies.
Mayweather, who turned 38 last Tuesday, is 2-1 favorite to win on May 2 but the odds could change as their training gets underway.
As the underdog in the May 2 weekend event, Pacquiao says he is motivated to train harder for the upcoming superfight.
“It doesn’t scare me. I love being the underdog. It even motivates me to train hard and go for the crown.” said Pacquiao, who started light training at his own Wild Card Gym in General Sanrtos City
Maywather's trainer-father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., said the fight will be an easy one for his son.
"I'm not saying that Floyd's not going to fight the best, because that's all Floyd has fought is the best, but I'm saying right now, since he ain't but a couple fights before he ends his career, I'm just saying that maybe those couple of fights could be easy," he said.
"Whether he knows it or not, if he takes Pacquiao, that'll be an easy fight for him. Pacquiao can't whoop no damn Alvarez. Pacquiao can't whoop them big fighters Floyd's fighting, he can't whoop them guys, man. Them guys would beat the shit out of Pacquiao," Floyd Sr. added.
Like Pacquiao, Mayweather has started light training at his own gym in Las Vegas.
