3 names surface in Arum’s shortlist for Pacquiao’s next fight

Arum has already disclosed to media the names of Terence Crawford and Vasyl Lomachenko as Pacquiao’s possible foes when the newly-elected Philippine senator returns to the ring after more than a year in retirement.

Although Arum had Lomachenko in mind for Pacquiao’s 2017 fight, he could be a prime prospect for Pacquiao’s planned October fight especially if the proposed Lomachenko-Salido rematch fails to gain traction.

The third challenger in Arum’s list could be Adrien Broner, who is under Al Haymon’s management. Arum and Haymon have recently made up following their long-running business rivalry that ended in a lawsuit.

Earlier, Golden Boy Promotions’ Senior Vice-President Eric Gomez was quoted to have said that Pacquiao is facing Broner for his comeback fight in October.

“But I do have it under good authority that (Pacquiao) is fighting Broner in an October pay-per-view. So he’s going to be fighting a month after Canelo because he has September,” Gomez said.

Arum has yet to confirm if indeed Broner is now included in his updated shortlist.

From the three names in Arum’s list, Crawford has the best chance of landing a fight with Pacquiao but only if he wins convincingly against Viktor Postol in their upcoming title fight set for July 23 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev.

Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs) and Postol are both unbeaten in their pro careers but the 28-year-old Omaha native is slightly favored to win because of his high percentage of wins via KO.

Lomachenko (7-1-0, 4KOs) is likely to do a rematch with Orlando Salido within the year but if negotiations fail to gain traction, the 28-year-old Ukrainian could be a serious contender.

Broner (32-2-0, 24 KOs) could be a good match for Pacquiao because he is good in marketing his fights which is good for both Arum in Haymon who are trying to be friendly with each other after a long and tedious court battle.

Arum is expected to include Floyd Mayweather in his shortlist once the world’s highest-paid athlete announces his return after staying retired for over a year.
