2017 NFL Mock Draft: Christian McCaffrey top option for Patriots?

Head coach Bill Belichick has always looked for advantages and that includes finding players that can perform multiple roles with the team. The front office and coaching staff have done a terrific year over the last decade in finding talent that fits the schemes that are run on offense and defense and will continue next April.

Walter Football is among the top sites that evaluate talent and project where college players will begin their professional careers. In their latest edition, they have the Patriots taking all-purpose running back Christian McCaffrey, a move that makes sense on several levels.

Not only is the Stanford star one of the best running back prospects in next years draft class, his ability to catch passes out of the backfield, along with returning punts and kick offs, make him one of the most versatile players to enter the league in years.

His ability to do each of these roles, and excel at them all, could save roster spots for other positions. While it seems unimportant, it allows Belichick and his staff to add depth at other areas of need, something that has allowed this franchise to become one of the best in league history.

The team does have other areas it could address in the first round, including offensive line and wide receiver. If the right player is available, New England will have no problem making a trade to get the player they want. Past history shows this NFL franchise isn’t afraid to be proactive and if that means moving picks and possibly a player to acquire McCaffrey or any other player they covet, don’t be surprised as this organization knows what its doing.
