2016 NHL Mock Draft: Maple Leafs on the clock with first pick

Despite suffering through a miserable season, fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs are excited as their favorite team has the first overall pick in June and with Auston Matthews as the prime target, this team could get better in a hurry.

The youngster managed 49 points in just 40 games this past season, but what makes this young man special is his ability to make those around him play at a higher level — just what this franchise needs as they look to build for future success.

Edmonton has had several top-3 picks over the last decade and have yet to make that next step, but this summer could prove different as the Oilers have not only the second overall pick in the NHL Draft, they also have room under the salary cap to bring a couple of solid veterans on board.

The team’s biggest need is on the back line, but they will likely fill that void through free agency, leaving the front office a chance to add another scoring threat. The latest mocks have 6’4″ winger Patrik Laine as the top available prospect and with his discipline on the ice, he could be the youngster that finally leads this proud franchise back into the playoffs.

Age finally caught up with Vancouver and the team suffered with the third-worst record in hockey, but fans of the Canucks have plenty to be excited about with several youngsters in their system having great years. Add the fact the front office can take a strong offensive or defensive player in the first round and this team could make a quick transition into being a force once again in the Western Conference.

Draft Site has Jesse Puljujärvi third in the latest player rankings and the type of player that could make an impact in his first year in the league. With former draft picks Brendan Gaunce and Brock Boeser ready to make the jump, youth will be served in Vancouver and for the fans, it should lead to a more exciting brand of hockey next season.
