2016 NHL Mock Draft: Detroit Red Wings updated projections

While most of the talk will center around possible free agent targets this franchise can add over the summer, the franchise must add enough young talent to keep pushing forward and give the team a shot at winning a championship in the next decade — and that help will come through the draft.

The latest mocks have management looking for offensive skilled players with their top two selections and without a pick in round three, getting this right could make a big difference for the future success of the motor city squad.

Draft Site has a winger as the top priority in the first round. Several quality prospects are available with a deep class of talent this year. Max Jones played for London of the Ontario Hockey League and the 18-year-old was terrific. He has good size at 6’2″ and nearly 200 pounds, but he also has a nasty streak that could help down the line as the front office looks to add some muscle and speed on the ice.

Luke Kunin of Wisconsin is another option as the Badgers forward has climbed the latest player rankings with his skill set and ability to put the puck in the net. The youngster might be a couple years off in making his NHL debut, but his speed isn’t coach able and with a few more pounds added to his frame, he could help this franchise with their goal of winning a Stanley Cup.

The second round will come down to the best available player and a lot will depend on how the teams in front of Detroit select the youngsters available. Depth on the front line is a priority, but if the right defensive player is right for the pickings, don’t be surprised to see the Red Wings use the 46th overall pick in the NHL Draft on a back line player.
