Here’s an updated look at the latest quarterback rankings and which young men will likely hear their name called next April.
At the start of the year it appeared Ohio State product Cardale Jones was a surefire first round selection, but despite the Buckeyes being undefeated, Jones and the offense haven’t played as expected and that has seen the 6’5″ junior slip down most draft boards. The latest projections now have Jones as a second to fourth round pick and unless something changes, his best bet might be a return to school for another year of experience.
The number one rated signal caller is now Jarred Goff of Cal and despite playing in an offensive scheme that hasn’t translated into success at the professional level, many experts believe he has the intangibles with his football smarts and arm strength to make the transition. Teams like Cleveland and Chicago should have the most interest.
Paxton Lynch is the biggest surprise in 2015 as he’s led Memphis to a perfect record through six games and into position to make a run at the NCAA College Football Playoffs with a perfect season. Lynch is big at 6’7″, but has surprising mobility and quick feet. However, his biggest asset has been accuracy as the junior has just one interception on the year and a completion rate over 70 percent.
This year’s small school star is Carson Wentz from North Dakota State. The 6’5″ senior is ranked eighth according to CBS Sports and with some experience against division one talent in the Senior Bowl, along with a strong showing at the NFL Combine, Wentz could be a name fans hear plenty about in the weeks heading into the draft.
