article image2016 MLB Mock Draft: Updated first round projections and analysis

By Larry Seely     Apr 30, 2016 in Sports
The first month of action for the 2015 MLB regular season is in the books and a closer look a the standings show a few teams not performing as expected.
The good news, for those off to a slow start, there's still plenty of time to gain some ground on division leaders. Another reason for some excitement is the upcoming amateur player draft in June, where teams look to find that next crop of star players and with some hope, that one superstar that can help a franchise win a World Series before his career is finished.
Philadelphia owns the first overall selection and with the Phillies playing much better than expected this season, it could change how they look at players. Jason Groome is the top-ranked prospect in the latest player rankings, but the high school senior is still years away from making an impact at the Major League level.
The front office could look towards the college ranks, hoping to find a youngster that could help withing the next twelve months. A.J. Puk of Florida and Alex Hansen of Oklahoma are both top pitching prospects and with Puk recently showing he can handle relief duties, Philly will set the course for the rest of the opening round based on which player they choose.
Reports have the Reds, who own the second pick, looking hard at shortstop Delvin Perez of Puerto Rico, but several MLB experts ow believe Cincinnati will take one of the pitchers named above as the team has struggled to find some consistency on the mound over the last two years.
Atlanta is off to a slow start and with the current roster, it appears the Braves won't improve much over the course of the year. The front office has always done a good job finding young talent, but this year could be key to the future of this franchise.
High school pitcher Riley Pint seems a surefire top-5 selection and the type of player that could help this organization in five years' time, but for a team that needs to energize the fans now, Puk or Hansen seem more of a logical choice, especially if they could get a call up in September and give the fans a quick look at what the future cold hold for the team.
