2016 College Football Preview: Cal vs. Hawaii open in Australia

The Golden Bears from the PAC 12 are a heavy favorite for the contest, -20.5 points in the latest lines from Las Vegas, but both programs will enter the contest with new quarterbacks and question marks at several positions.

Jared Goff is now playing in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams, leaving Davis Webb to take the reigns on offense. The former Texas Tech signal caller is a gunslinger and new team captain. With a good group of receivers and a decent running game, Cal should be able to move the ball easily against their MWC foe. Many experts expect 40+ points to be put on the scoreboard.

The Rainbow Warriors also have a new leader on offense and after winning just three games last year, it might not be such a bad thing. Ikaika Woolsey is more of a duel-threat quarterback and should help move the ball more with his legs, but the team is also deep at running back with three experienced players returning. Paul Harris is the best of the group. He rushed for over 1,100 yards as a junior last season and for this squad to have any shot at pulling an upset, controlling the ball on the ground will be key.

This game is making big news ‘down under’ with the game being broadcast nationally on Fox Sports. The game is also scheduled on TV in the States with a late Friday night kickoff. With no other games on this weekend, millions are expected to enjoy the contest played at ANZ Stadium, which is best known for hosting rugby matches.

Cal is the more talented side in this match up and should win comfortably in the end. But if Hawaii can move the ball early, it could become a high-scoring affair in Sydney, giving the fans plenty of excitement and a good example of NCAA football for the Australians that will take in all the pageantry the game has to offer.
