2016-17 NBA Power Rankings: Cavs top training camp edition

LeBron James proved he’s the best player in the game, dominating the Warriors and guiding the Cavs’ to their first-ever championship. These two sides should battle again all year for the top spot and until Golden State can knock them off, they will remain the second best basketball team in the league.

Summer always brings changes and this year was no different. Free agent signings and rookies can make a big impact and change the landscape in both conferences. The biggest story for the young players is Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid playing for the first time.

The former first round pick has missed the last two years due to injuries and will take the court for the first time in the coming weeks. While his addition should help this squad win more games, their lack of depth in the back court will limit the amount of games they can win this season, but fans should be entertained with the young group this franchise has in place.

Finding the third best team is tough as several franchises are set for big years and hoping to knock the top two sided down a few notches. ESPN has San Antonio next on the list and with the mix of veterans and youth, the Spurs could have a big year, but don’t look past the LA Clippers, especially with Blake Griffin healthy and ready to put last season in the rear view mirror.

Toronto and Boston figure to battle it out for the second best record in the Eastern Conference with both teams having plenty of talent. The Raptors must find a power forward and some depth in the paint, but the addition of Jarred Sullinger and a couple rookies should help.

The Celtics landed free agent center Al Horford, but this team still needs more depth in the front court. General manager Danny Ainge has assembled the best group of players this organization has had in the last decade and if the gel early, this could be the surprise team in the NBA this season.
