For several franchises, help will start with the upcoming draft and with a good off-season, teams that missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, could be playing in the post season in 2016.
Buffalo has been preparing for the future for the last two years and with two picks in the first round, adding some fire-power is a must. The Sabres have a plan to build a strong foundation with young players and with the right picks this year, the next five plus seasons could be exciting for the fans.
With the likely first overall selection this summer, it now appears that center Connor McDavid of Erie is the top prospect. The youngster has excellent vision and among the best offensive weapons to hit the league in the past five years. With good size and above average skating skills, Buffalo could have the face of their franchise for the next decade.
Don’t be surprised if the front office doesn’t look for more weapons with their pick later in the round. The latest mocks have winger Daniel Spronge as a possible target and if available, he would add another strong offensive weapon the franchise will need to make the top-8 in the Eastern Conference withing the next few seasons.
Edmonton also has two selections in the opening round and many believe the Oilers will look for help on defense. With several top picks in recent years, the franchise has some good young offensive players, but they need some depth and size on the back line.
Draft Site has defender Noah Hanifin as the top defensive player in the draft. At 6’2″ and just over 200 pounds, this youngster already has the size needed and with his aggressive style, he could make the Oilers squad next year.
If the team can land a big time player on the back line, adding a winger could be the option later in the first round. Both of these franchises need help and if they can add some experience through free agency, look for the 2016 NHL season to be more successful for both teams.
