The big win will allow the front office to select Connor McDavid, widely considered the top offensive prospect to enter the league in the past decade. Oilers fans should finally get a player that can lead this team into the playoffs and possibly a talent that will remind everyone of the great Wayne Gretzky.
While winning the lottery was big news, Edmonton also has a pick in the middle of the first round. The latest mock from Damien Cox has the team selecting a defender, something this team needs if they truly want to move up in the standings and contend for a top eight spot in the Western Conference.
Buffalo is in rebuilding mode and would have loved to land McDavid, but the Sabres are now sitting in the second spot and should grab Jack Eichel. The youngster just led his Boston University squad to the Frozen Four and has all the skills to become a star in the NHL.
Toronto has the fourth overall pick and need some help putting the puck in the net. Maple Leafs fans had a disappointing year, but this franchise has enough talent already on hand to make a strong showing in the 2015-16 season.
Dylan Strome of Erie played with McDavid this past year in Erie of the Ontario Hockey league and while not the prolific scorer of his team member, he has the size the Leafs’ want and the ability to make those around him better, both attributes this squad needs to succeed.
Toronto is another team that has two picks in the first round and the front office should look to add another scoring threat. Winger Daniel Sprong is a good option, but if Nick Merkleyn is still available, look for management to take the young winger in a snap.
With the drafting order now in place and the playoffs in full action, hockey is buzzing on social media and for those teams watching from home, things could change quickly with a strong showing this summer and it will all start with the draft.
